When Laura and Mary had said their prayers and were tucked snugly under the trundle bed's covers, Pa was sitting in the firelight with the fiddle. Ma had blown out the lamp because she did not need its light. On the other side of the hearth she was swaying gently in her rocking chair and her knitting needles flashed in and out above the sock she was knitting.
The long winter evenings of firelight and music had come again.

Love those books! I try to reread Little House In The Big Woods every winter.
ReplyDeleteI never read the books, but I LOVED the show!! I never missed an episode.
ReplyDeleteI feel as if I am almost there, that you also for sharing on your previous blog awesome song
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to pull this series of books out - to read a chapter or two each night, to our kids (when they're a bit older) - just like my dad read to me and my, at the time, 4 or 5 siblings (I have 8) on winter evenings before going to sleep for the night. ;)
ReplyDeleteFond memories...
How beautiful!! God was always in their mist~surrounding them with love. I have set up a little room off the side of my house with a rocking chair, a little electric fireplace and a hearth rug~I have the children sitting on the rug playing at night feeling like I am Caroline with my knitting needles. I do wish I had a real fireplace! But the electric one will have to do for now. It is the smallest room but the most coziest. God bless, Rose
